Hampton School Board schedules public hearings on school renaming

During the May 4th School Board meeting, Martha Mugler, chair of the Board, announced details on two public hearings regarding the possible renaming of schools.

She shared that earlier this spring, Andrew Shannon of the Virginia State Unit of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, made a request of the Hampton School Board to consider renaming Davis Middle School and the Campus at Lee.

“It is the consensus of the Hampton School Board to follow Board Policy FFA,” she said. “The Board may rename a school or school facility upon a determination that it is appropriate to do so. As part of our due diligence, the School Board will accept public feedback prior to moving forward in order to determine the public will for change.”

Two public hearings will be held on the matter. The first hearing will be held from 6:00 – 6:30 p.m. on May 18, in the 1st Floor Conference Room at the Ruppert Sargent Building, located at 1 Franklin Street. The second public hearing will be held from 6:00 – 6:30 p.m. on June 1, in the auditorium at Jones Magnet School.

Speakers will have two minutes to speak on the topic of whether the School Board should consider renaming Davis Middle School and the Campus at Lee.
