Subject: Recommended Revisions to Indicators and Reporting Date

Type: Action

1. Involve parents and families as partners in the education of their children, providing an open, responsive, and welcoming environment that treats all people with respect, dignity, and courtesy.

1a) The five customer service standards of responsiveness, accuracy, availability, partnership, and advice will be used to determine current client satisfaction through surveys.

Delete 1a) because it is too narrowly focused on customer service and doesn’t capture the broader picture of parent and family involvement as partners in the education of their children.

Replace with new 1a):

1a) Carry out a biennial survey of parents and families that assesses their relationship with their individual school(s) and Fairfax County Public Schools, in general, in supporting the achievement of their student(s)

Add new indicator to encompass the wide range of activities, programs, and services that are currently listed under Additional Highlights Not Specific to an Indicator.

1b) Provide support and information to parents and families through written communications, training, resources, and other programs.

7. Pursue effective and cooperative work with the County Board of Supervisors and county staff; local, state, and federal officials; legislative staffs; and agency officials in all levels of government.

7g) Annually review crisis management plans and practice crisis management, including conducting at least two crisis exercises or workshops, one of which will involve local, state, and/or federal officials.

Delete this indicator because this information is already covered in the Facilities Monitoring Report and DCCO’s role in communicating in a crisis is outlined in 7b.

Add this OE and Indicator:
9. Implement a strategic communications plan to enable effective communications between the school system and the community it serves.

9a) Annually review and revise the communications plan.

Recommendation that the reporting date of the Community Relations Monitoring Report be changed from April to November, which is closer to the reporting period.
