The
2008-2009 Program/Attendance Area Adjustments
were adopted by the School Board on February 28, 2008. The final motions and votes are as follows:
Approve a boundary adjustment for Springfield Estates Elementary School and Forestdale Elementary School, including provisions for phasing in by grade and as detailed in the agenda item at Appendix A, and pursuant to Virginia Code Section 22.1-79(4), and Policy 8130.5, Local School Boundaries—Program Assignments and School Closings.
The vote on the Springfield boundary was
approved
11-0-1
, with Mrs. Bradsher, Mr. Center, Mr. Gibson, Mrs. Kory, Mr. Moon, Mr. Niedzielski-Eichner, Mr. Raney, Mrs. Smith, Mr. Storck, Mrs. Strauss, and Mrs. Wilson voting “aye” and with Ms. Hone abstaining.
Approve boundary adjustments for South Lakes, Oakton, Chantilly, Madison, and Westfield High Schools, Thoreau and Hughes Middle Schools, and Wolftrap and Sunrise Valley Elementary Schools, including provisions for phasing in by grade and as detailed in the agenda item at Appendix B, and pursuant to Virginia Code Section 22.1-79(4), and Policy 8130.5, Local School Boundaries—Program Assignments and School Closings.
The vote on the West County boundary was
approved 10-2
, with Mrs. Bradsher, Mr. Center, Mr. Gibson, Mrs. Kory, Mr. Moon, Mr. Niedzielski-Eichner, Mrs. Smith, Mr. Storck, Mrs. Strauss, and Mrs. Wilson voting “aye” and with Ms. Hone and Mr. Raney voting “nay.”
A follow-on motion was also approved:
Direct the Superintendent—in conjunction with implementing the South Lakes High School's (SLHS) and related boundary adjustment— to report to the School Board at the October 2008 work session on efforts to further strengthen SLHS’s advanced academic opportunities for its students through its International Baccalaureate (IB) program and through individual IB and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. In addition to reporting on these efforts, the
SLHS Advanced Course Report
shall also provide:
1. the communications strategy used by SLHS and Langston Hughes Middle School (LHMS) to introduce IB to Western Fairfax middle school and high school families who may wish to pupil place their child into the IB Middle Years Programme, or the IB high school program;
2. the process by which SLHS will help facilitate opportunities for students taking IB courses to secure AP credit by preparing for, and taking, the AP examination for similar course content areas;
3. a time frame for engaging the SLHS/LHMS community in a discussion about advanced curricular opportunities offered, and to be offered, at SLHS and LHMS as the schools reach their maximum estimated enrollment.
Further direct the Superintendent to monitor and report to the Board about pupil placement into and out of SLHS during each of the next five years.
