Subject: Secondary Course Offerings

School Board Action Required: Decision

Related To: Student Achievement Goal 1.

Key Points:

The following courses were recommended by the Course Review Committee as additions to the list of high school standard course offerings for the 2010-11 school year:

American Sign Language 4
Background:
The addition of this course will provide students the opportunity to continue developing their proficiency in ASL, thereby opening career opportunities and greater understanding of Deaf culture. There are no AP options in American Sign Language.

Computer Graphics 4: Portfolio Preparation
Background:
The addition of this course will provide students with the opportunity to complete a four-year sequence in Computer Graphics and begin portfolio preparation. Currently, schools are providing this opportunity but through inconsistent course coding.

Engineering Mathematics
Background:
Offered as a School-Site course SY 2009-2010, Engineering Mathematics prepares students to successfully advance through the freshman calculus sequence thereby reducing attrition rates in college engineering programs.

Geographic Information Systems 1
Background:
The addition of this course will increase students’ awareness of and exposure to the emerging field of geotechnology, both as an area of study and as a career path.

Geosystems Honors
Background:
Currently Geosystems has only one standard offering and is the only science course that does not have an honors equivalent. The Geosystems course may lose enrollments in favor of other weighted science options.

Photography 4: Portfolio Preparation
Background:
The addition of this course will provide students with the opportunity to complete a four-year sequence in Photography and begin portfolio preparation. Currently, schools are providing this opportunity but through inconsistent course coding.

Standard and optional courses for high schools and middle schools are reviewed each year, and new proposals are submitted to the Course Review Committee for review and recommendations to the Superintendent and School Board. This process is outlined in Regulation 3202.7, Approval of New Courses and Deletion and Consolidation of Existing Courses.

Recommendation:

That the School Board approve changes to the list of middle and high school course offerings for the 2010-2011 school year, as recommended by the Course review Committee and as detailed in the agenda item.

Our adopted rules of Parliamentary Procedure, Robert's Rules, provide for a consent agenda listing several items for approval of the Board by a single motion. Most of the items listed under the consent agenda have gone through Board subcommittee review and recommendation. Documentation concerning these items has been provided to all Board members and the public in advance to assure an extensive and thorough review. Items may be removed from the consent agenda at the request of any board member.
