1. Middle School Mathematics: $2,725,086 The current Grade 6 math, pre-Algebra, and Algebra titles were “first generation” math materials created in response to new math standards over a decade ago. Approval of the proposed curriculum will place in our students’ hands more explicit standards-based instructional materials, and provide teachers with an articulated sequence of textbooks across the middle grades. Electronic versions of the materials, online student tutorials, workbooks, and extensive teacher training are included.
2. World Languages: $740,198 French, Spanish, and German language books are needed for next year. The present materials are eight years old and do not explicitly address the current framework and standards for this subject area. New textbooks will include electronic formats, online support, and student workbooks for the “life of the adoption.” The Education Code requires that world language be offered beginning at Grade 7, and as the district moves toward a-g education for all students, these materials will be crucial. 3. High School Geometry, Chemistry, and Chemistry Honors: $1,974,553 The new materials provide a much closer correlation and explicit connection to California standards. Technology-based instructional materials characterize the materials included in this recommendation. 4. Advanced Placement: $611,219 New books (with technology) for over 2,000 Advanced Placement (AP) students of AP English Lit/ Composition, Art History, and Chemistry across the district; includes support for more AP courses in SDUSD. 5. Music Appreciation: $67,265 Over 700 students in fifteen different secondary schools take this Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) course each year. To date, there has not been a common textbook available to meet the needs of students across the district. This purchase will formalize instruction in music appreciation classes across the district. School Site Involvement: This year, 157 teachers served as voting committee members on 23 adoption committees. Textbook Adoption Committee members were recruited districtwide through memos to every principal, flyers sent to every school for posting in teacher and parent areas, and numerous announcements in Newsline and the Operations Update. Principals approved the teachers’ participation. Committees were balanced first by geographical representation so all stakeholders were represented. Approximately $115,000 dollars was spent to pay for teacher substitute days and hourly pay for after school meetings and independent evaluation time.
